Why train with us?

The Crampton partnership of schools is an inspirational place to work and learn. Crampton is an outstanding school and we are the lead school in a partnership of similarly high performing, welcoming and successful schools in Southwark.

Our partnership of schools comprises of a range of schools which vary in both size and cultural mix to provide a school based learning opportunity in partnership with London Southbank University and the Institute of Education.

Our partner schools have a range of strengths and methods of teaching and our aim is to expose teacher trainees to the various approaches, which they will be able to learn from and adopt to strengthen their own teaching.

About the training programmes

The primary generalist course (2MBT) Accrediting ITT provider: London Southbank University

This will embody a collaborative approach enabling trainees to connect with experienced school based professionals, whilst also receiving guidance from London Southbank University staff.

As part of the School Direct programme you will follow the highly successful primary PGCE course at London Southbank and have full access to the University’s facilities. For the majority of your time you will be based in school for four days a week, with a day spent at London Southbank University. These sessions will engage with generic and subject specific areas and help you to become a reflective teacher.

The salaried programme will also involve attending a two-week intensive summer school prior to commencing the school based experience.

All School Direct students will need to complete the following modules: Maths, English, Science and Foundation Subjects: These will be assessed through school based directed activities and subject knowledge audits, reviews and portfolios.

Master’s Level Modules: The compulsory module is Equality, Inclusion and Citizenship. Options: You will choose one further option in consultation with the school.

Successfully completing all aspects of the course will gain you the award of Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) which also carries 60 M level credits that may be used towards a subsequent master’s degree. The course also leads to the award of QTS (Qualified Teacher Status).

You will be assigned a university tutor who will help to create your bespoke training programme as well as support your development as a teacher through tutorials, visits to the school and guidance with assignments.

What will my training year look like?

You will be placed in a school within the partnership for your main placement. You will be assigned an experienced mentor in school who will support you by meeting with you weekly, by observing lessons, by drawing up a suitable timetable that will develop your skills and broaden your experience.

Your in-school training will include classroom observations, peer observations, working with individuals, small groups and whole classes to deliver lessons, planning in phase groups, mentor sessions and professional development meetings.

In addition to the main placement you will also be placed in a second school for 4 - 6 weeks in the Spring term. This will enable you to experience a different environment and work with different pupils. We aim to ensure that trainee teachers have the opportunity to teach across consecutive key stages or age phases at some point within their two placements.

Teaching responsibility will alter depending on the individual, but will be a gradual development of class responsibilities from group and individual lessons into class responsibility. This will take into account your individual training plans and previous experience.
